His dr prescribed an Epipen and when I went to Wal-Mart to pick it up, I was told his insurance did not cover Epipens and was going to cost me $517.00. I had to sell my car to buy something that could potentially save my son's life. The theatre personnel were frantic and went crazy trying to remove every possible trace of latex from the room and the air, only to find out post-op that the woman just meant she didn't like the feel. Another story like this ended with the person saying that latex made their hand eczema worse.

There are too many people who get hand eczema when they wear latex gloves and then claim to have an allergy that people take latex allergy even less seriously than they take food allergies. Explaining to people that balloons, my brand-new (sadly unwearable) trainers, cosmetics, glues and even the packaging on Soleros poses a threat to me is hard enough, but getting people to realise that cleaning tables in a restaurant whilst wearing latex gloves would at least bring me out in a rash and could even contaminate my food or kickstart an anaphylactic reaction is almost impossible! And all because people assume I get hand eczema from latex gloves!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02876551245893694132noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569897044603346297.post-33015545603024364092015-01-05T23:58:25.582-06:002015-01-05T23:58:25.582-06:00Thanks for this tremendous post and your idea.

VOC's linger in home and are the leading cause of "sick home syndrome", along with causing asthma for many. Or, making asthma worse. Try to purchase VOC free glass cleaners especially since almost all glass cleaners have high levels of VOC's (ammonia, alcohol, fragrances etc.). I suppose that's to be expected since I am on the ground level and they are thinking about millions of people at any given moment. But here is the problem with that disconnect! It scared me to death when I worked with a woman who claimed to be allergic to onions when she simply disliked them. Often, a waiter would tell her that she couldn't eat any of the sauces, because they were all made with onions in the stock... & she would say, "Oh, that's okay. I can eat them as long as I can't taste them." Then, moments later, I would have to explain to the same waiter that even the slightest cross-contamination with strawberries would result in my having to use an Epi-pen & call 911. They were a lot less likely to take my real health issue seriously as a result of her lying. Therefore, a prefilled syringe is probably not a great idea unless you replace it frequently. If the size of the EpiPen is cumbersome, you may wish to consider the Auvi-Q, a more compact epinephrine autoinjector.Sakina Bajowala, MDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03240454760485085295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569897044603346297.post-71774149363888314622013-06-12T23:26:30.909-05:002013-06-12T23:26:30.909-05:00It seems awful to say it, but $200 will seem like ...It seems awful to say it, but $200 will seem like a bargain if your daughter is unlucky enough to ever experience another systemic allergic reaction. However, I understand that budgets are tight, and it can be difficult to fork over so much money for a medication you hope to never use. I think of it as insurance - most people would think $200/year for a life insurance or disability insurance policy would be a great deal. That said, there are currently coupons available to assist you with your out-of-pocket expenses, taking up to $100 of the cost of each 2-pack. Talk to your doctor to see if they have any coupons in stock, or visit the EpiPen or Auvi-Q websites.Sakina Bajowala, MDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03240454760485085295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569897044603346297.post-57901308607694936322013-06-12T23:20:57.855-05:002013-06-12T23:20:57.855-05:00The reason that Epinephrine autoinjectors are now ...The reason that Epinephrine autoinjectors are now only sold in 2-packs is because ~20% of the time that epinephrine is required in an allergic emergency, a second dose is needed in order to quell the reaction. Now that competitors are on the market, I expect to see some price wars in order to gain/maintain market share. There are currently excellent coupons available for both the EpiPen and Auvi-Q which may substantially reduce your out-of-pocket expense.Sakina Bajowala, MDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03240454760485085295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569897044603346297.post-19664846765254139472013-05-15T23:15:14.795-05:002013-05-15T23:15:14.795-05:00I SPECIFICALLY requested that my doctor prescribe ...I SPECIFICALLY requested that my doctor prescribe only ONE EpiPen since I (gratefully) have thrown them after not being stung (anaphylaxis if stung by bee). I about fell on the floor when, even with insurance, the cost was over $98 at WalMart. They filled the Rx with a twin pack and, when I questioned why they didn't follow MD order, they insisted that it is ONLY available as a twin pack. What a scam! There is no way on a tight budget as a single person that I can afford it. I told them to restock it and I pray I'm within 15 minutes of a hospital if I get stung.
