I'd love to see that happen to that prick.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569897044603346297.post-24710549073975679512015-05-30T12:17:34.798-05:002015-05-30T12:17:34.798-05:00I have a Type 1 (severe) Latex Allergy and I heard...I have a Type 1 (severe) Latex Allergy and I heard an anecdote of a woman who was just about to go into surgery when she claimed to be allergic to latex. The theatre personnel were frantic and went crazy trying to remove every possible trace of latex from the room and the air, only to find out post-op that the woman just meant she didn't like the feel. Another story like this ended with the person saying that latex made their hand eczema worse.

There are too many people who get hand eczema when they wear latex gloves and then claim to have an allergy that people take latex allergy even less seriously than they take food allergies. Explaining to people that balloons, my brand-new (sadly unwearable) trainers, cosmetics, glues and even the packaging on Soleros poses a threat to me is hard enough, but getting people to realise that cleaning tables in a restaurant whilst wearing latex gloves would at least bring me out in a rash and could even contaminate my food or kickstart an anaphylactic reaction is almost impossible! And all because people assume I get hand eczema from latex gloves!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02876551245893694132noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569897044603346297.post-46269073453190544082014-05-25T23:11:29.138-05:002014-05-25T23:11:29.138-05:00As someone with a lifelong, life-threatening straw...As someone with a lifelong, life-threatening strawberry allergy, I heartily agree! It scared me to death when I worked with a woman who claimed to be allergic to onions when she simply disliked them. Often, a waiter would tell her that she couldn't eat any of the sauces, because they were all made with onions in the stock... & she would say, "Oh, that's okay. I can eat them as long as I can't taste them." Then, moments later, I would have to explain to the same waiter that even the slightest cross-contamination with strawberries would result in my having to use an Epi-pen & call 911. They were a lot less likely to take my real health issue seriously as a result of her lying. Food allergies are so common with kids, you'd think he would have had more interest and the sense to object to the bad advice. They really owe it to people with food allergies to make a statement saying that falsely claiming a food allergy is wrong and possibly harmful to those who really are allergic.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569897044603346297.post-20927348785763945512012-06-19T08:55:35.028-05:002012-06-19T08:55:35.028-05:00New update: "The Doctors" program has re...New update: "The Doctors" program has removed the advice to "fake a butter allergy" from their website! The synopsis of the program now reads "Hold the Butter" instead. http://www.thedoctorstv.com/main/show_synopsis/1012?section=synopsis
Also, the video of tip #9 has been removed from the website. All those signatures and comments are making an impact! However, although it is an encouraging start, quietly removing misinformation from the website doesn't truly counteract the detrimental effects of the aired segment. That will require an on-air retraction (ideally coupled with a segment focused on food allergy awareness). Let's keep encouraging the program to do the right thing...Sakina Bajowala, MDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03240454760485085295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569897044603346297.post-11898768018180114702012-06-19T08:49:47.162-05:002012-06-19T08:49:47.162-05:00Thank you, Libby! It is surprising that anyone who calls themselves a doctor would advocate for anything that would promote the misunderstanding of a medical condition. If someone asked for extra bread - I'd likely expect them to ask again if they came back. Faking an allergy on one visit, then returning to order a dish with the allergen on another day would completely lead to a lack of confidence in people with true allergies. It's crying wolf on a life threatening situation, potentially leading to fatal mistakes.
